To be certain, it means something different for every human being. For some it’s the next book that you’ve been waiting for, or the next book you’ll be reading, or the next book you will be writing. For some it’s just the next book you will be reading.
So next book is for some a verb that refers to being next book in a list, and for others it is a noun that refers to something that is the next book. But I think most of us who have been reading for a while know what the verb is, and that is to be reading.
So next book is what we’ve been reading for the past year, which is a fairly new term. But it means reading something for the first time.

I’ve used it more than I should have, because I’ve been rereading the same books over and over again (or rereading the same book) and I can’t seem to stop. It seems like there’s a way to take that back a little bit and say to myself, “You are the next book in a series.
